Internet Explorer search box naughtiness

The first time Internet Explorer runs, you’re asked if you wish to keep Bing as your search provider, or choose from a selection of other available search providers. If you opt to choose, you’re taken a page that allows you to choose from the most popular sites, including Google and Yahoo. Here is the link to this page:

However, it’s trickier to do this after the initial setup. The most obvious way to change search providers is to use the “Find more search providers” feature, which is either available in the drop down menu next to the search button (magnifying glass), or from the Tools menu (Tools -> Manage Add-Ons -> Search Providers -> Find more search providers…). Using this feature takes you to a different page:

The options on this page are Microsoft Exclusive - almost all of the sites are Bing search sites, and there are no links to add other search providers (Google, Yahoo, etc). You can install a “Search with Google” accelerator, which allows you to select text, right click, and then ”Search with Google”, but this doesn’t update your default search provider or the search box that appears next to the address bar.

Yes, that time of year has returned once more - the clocks have gone back, the evenings are drawing in earlier, and the upper lips of men all around the world are getting colder. So, for the second year running, the MDA team have decided to brave out another month of Movember and grow their facial folicles for charity once again.

Here’s how it’s going to work: our clean-shaven company team (currently 5 people, and growing) will hide their razors, shy away from the scissors and grow their beards until the end of November, at which point we will try our very best to hack our gob-mullets into a style nominated by those who have kindly donated their hard-earned pennies (that’s you!).

Last year we were grateful and astounded to find that we raised over £1000, all of which was donated towards beating prostate cancer.

Oracle 10G RMAN Error

The following RMAN error was received when running a compressed backup of a 1TB+ database on Oracle 10.1.0.4.0 on Solaris 9.

Recovery Manager complete.

This appears to be an issue with this particular environment (OS and/or Oracle version) however nothing was logged in /var/adm/messages to suggest a hardware issue.

Solution: remove RMAN compression from the backups. Removing compression also had a vast performance improvement.

I think Scotts so Easy is far superior to Oats so Simple, and definitely worth waiting that extra microwave-minute for a decent bowl of porridge! It’s great to have a bowl with some substance in it, not some mushy puree’d oat soupy stuff.
